Subscribers receive four issues per year, or one annual volume, totaling 1000 pages. Founded in 1665 by Denis de Sallo, adviser to the Parliament of Paris, under the tutelage of Colbert, it enjoyed royal patronage in 1701. Suspended in 1792, the publication was restored and reorganized in 1816: until 1900 it was printed at the public expense by a board chaired first by the Minister of Justice, then by the Minister of Education and only the members of the Institut were allowed to publish in it. However, as it was unable to provide permanently for the publication of the Journal des Savants, the Institut de France offered the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres to take over this responsibility that she endorsed from 1909 with subsides from the Foundation Dourlans. An international bilingual journal, the Mélanges particularly encourage scientific exchanges between French and Spanish researchers. Between 1990 and 1996 the journal was published annually in three parts, each dealing with separate periods (Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the Modern Age and the Contemporary Age). In 2003 the division into periods was abandoned and a cross-disciplinary approach was encouraged, with two regular annual issues. This twofold decompartmentalisation —of periods and specialities— is in line with the general trend in research and is reflected in the thematic dossier and in the miscellany section.
